Price Transparency Compliance Over Time

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has increased its level of scrutiny over hospital compliance and MRF completeness since price transparency first went into effect. There are several components CMS monitors for compliance, including the MRF name and file type, file contents, the presence of a shoppable services file or Patient Estimate Tool, and  assurance that files are updated annually. CMS also publishes hospitals it has fined on this public website.

Turquoise Health created a scorecard that specifically focuses on MRF completeness and price transparency compliance over time. As of Q1 2023, nearly 5,400 hospitals posted MRFs. While this is not an official look at compliance (only CMS determines that) the chart below can give you a good idea of the rate with which hospitals post files, and ideally, posted complete ones.
